Professor in the Department of Arts and Media, School of Arts and Humanities at SUNY Empire State College. Research examines metaliteracy, an empowering pedagogical framework for innovative teaching and learning. In 2011, originated the metaliteracy model with Trudi E Jacobson in the article Reframing Information Literacy as a Metaliteracy.
Metaliteracy was featured as part of the national WAMC production The Academic Minute, which airs on 70 radios stations in the U.S. and Canada, as well as online. Several metaliteracy publications and grant projects have been developed with colleagues in the Metaliteracy Learning Collaborative. Publications and presentations about the theory and practice of metaliteracy continue both nationally and internationally.
Member of the editorial team for Open Praxis, the open access peer-reviewed academic journal about open, distance and flexible education that is published by the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE).
Served as a member of peer review teams that conducted self-study visits for Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) in 2017 and 2018.
Extensive experience as an academic administrator at SUNY Empire State College for ten years as Associate Dean and Dean of the Center for Distance Learning (CDL), and in senior management roles as Vice Provost for Academic Programs and Interim Provost.
Previous experience as a faculty member in the Department of Information Studies at The University at Albany and also taught in a collaborative first-year experience program and worked in faculty development at an innovative teaching and learning center.
Locally, serve on the Board of Directors for the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in the Capital Region of New York. Chair of the Nominating and Governance Committee and Executive Committee.
